Since 2023, employers are required to retrieve sick notes digitally instead of having employees submit them. What used to involve paperwork and phone inquiries is now clearly structured: retrieve the eAU automatically, digitally, and as a mandatory process. Since 2025, the procedure has been further expanded. New types of absence such as rehabilitation or hospital stays have been integrated, feedback processes have been enhanced, and requirements for HR processes have increased significantly.
It is law: since 01/01/2023, the electronic certificate of incapacity for work (eAU) has been mandatory for all employers. Health insurance providers now transmit sick leave data electronically to employers. It is important that the transfer of sensitive data is carried out exclusively via a suitable digital interface to the HR department. A certified software solution such as ZEUS® is required for this purpose. Crucially, the responsibility remains with the company. Employers must actively retrieve the data within the required deadlines.
Since then, older formats of the certificate of incapacity for work are no longer valid. Companies need certified systems to ensure continued compliance; with ZEUS®, they are on the safe side.
